The Qin Dynasty was short from 221-206BC but a landmark in China`s history. Qin Shi Huangdi gained the victory in a period of the wars between the partial states of the moribund Zhou dynasty and moreover conquered many areas along the boundaries of the old China. He united them all into a still greater China under a strong centralized regime with a tough bureaucracy. The Chinese language, the measures and weights were standardized. There was only one philosophy, that of the ruler. It is said that hundreds or even thousands of sages and scholars were buried l alive.
Qin Shi crowned himself to the first Chinese Emperor and this title was kept for all Chinese dynasty leaders until our century. He linked a number of defensive structures together to create the Great Wall . And like the pharaos, he constructed massive mausoleums, which he protected with pits and thousands of lifelike but larger-than-live terracotta soldiers and horses.  terracotta3.gif (5620 bytes)
A very sophisticated, one may say modern, political and social system was established within this short period. Chang`an (todays Xian) became a big capital.  By the way, this all happened before Christ was born ! But the ruthelessness of this regime resulted into violent rebellions short after the emperor had died. The fall of the Qin followed two peaceful and cultural sophisticated dynasties: The Han Dynasty and then the Tang Dynasty which is called the Golden Age of China......
